They are also a high sugar or Brix cherry. This may not be the best kept secret, but Rainier cherries are naturally big and super-sweet. The average Brix is the sugar content of an aqueous solution.
That means that one-fifth each cherry is sugar! Rainier cherry trees are often planted between dark-sweet cherry trees in orchard rows in order to provide a different pollen source for bees during the important cherry bloom stage. Rainier cherry trees are still used as pollenizers today, although here at Stemilt, we plant orchards of Rainiers in order to harvest and ship more of this delicious fruit to supermarkets!
National Rainier Cherry Day happens every July 11th. From now through August, we will be picking, packing and shipping these little gems seven days a week. In all likelihood, when visiting your local supermarket, you will find two different types of cherries. Although there are numerous varieties for each type, we classify them as Dark Sweet and Rainier. The obvious difference between them is their appearance. Dark Sweet cherries are a rich, mahogany color, whereas Rainier cherries are yellow, with a tinge of red.
However, their flavor profile also sets them apart from one another. Rainiers have a lower acidity level, which results in them having higher brix sugar content. Thus, Rainier cherries are actually sweeter than Dark Sweet cherries. In addition, the growing season for Rainier cherries is much shorter. There is less acreage planted in the Pacific Northwest, therefore there is less volume to supply consumers with. For me, white cherries never scale the heights of magnificence that red cherries do, but they are much more consistent.
There are points in June and at the end of July when red cherries are available but not worth buying. To me, they taste like mud.
I have found undamaged white cherries to be pretty consistent in taste whenever they're available. The season is too short for me to spurn either contender. Which to choose? I say, Both. Create a personalised content profile. Measure ad performance.
