The brighter the light, the better selenium conducts electricity. This property has made selenium useful in devices that respond to the intensity of light, such as electric eyes, photo cells, light meters for cameras and copiers.

Selenium can also produce electricity directly from sunlight and is used in solar cells. Selenium is also a semiconductor and is used in some types of solid-state electronics as well as in rectifiers, devices which convert alternating current electricity into direct current electricity. In addition to its use in electrical devices, selenium is also used to make a ruby-red color in glasses and enamels, as a photographic toner and as an additive to stainless steel.

Here are the properties of selenium, according to the Jefferson Lab :. Berzelius also determined the atomics weights of many elements and developed a system of chemical symbols.

Berzelius discovered selenium after analyzing an impurity in sulfuric acid being produced at a factory in Sweden.

He thought it was tellurium at first, and then realized it was unknown element, according to the Jefferson Lab. At one time, selenium was thought to be a toxin. In the s doctors began researching selenium's ability to fight tumors. It turns out both trains of thought were right. Some animal studies have shown that selenium may help protect against cancer, but that taking a supplement is not a good idea, according to the American Cancer Society.

There is very little room for error in dosage and just a little more than needed can be toxic. High doses can cause these side effects, according to the University of Maryland :. Selenium is found in many different foods. Other foods that have selenium include muscle meats, grains and dairy products.

It can also be found in drinking water in some places.

The 16th-century Spanish explorer and conquistador Hernando de Soto c. In , while leading an expedition in search of gold, he sighted The story of North American exploration spans an entire millennium and involves a wide array of European powers and uniquely American characters.

Sir Francis Drake participated in some of the earliest English slaving voyages to Africa and earned a reputation for his privateering, or piracy, against Spanish ships and possessions. History Early HistoryAnthropological In , Coronado led a major Spanish expedition Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian-born merchant and explorer who took part in early voyages to the New World on behalf of Spain around the late 15th century. By that time, the Vikings had established settlements in present-day North America as early as 1, A.

In search of fame and fortune, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan c. En route he discovered what is now known as the Strait of Magellan and became the Live TV. The logs of both Columbus and Ponce de Leon contain evidence that the Taino Indians in the islands and the Calusa in Florida had knowledge of the sophisticated Maya civilization on the Yucatan Peck : ; Peck : 4.

An early German engraving of Juan Ponce de Leon with his signature. The engraving was possibly made from a sixteenth-century family portrait, since lost. The three vessels shown here are typical of the vessels used by Ponce de Leon on his voyage. The two caravels are on the left side and the bergantina is on the right. There is no mention of seeking the fountain of youth or slaves, but the patent contained detailed instructions for accountability of the gold that he was expected to find in this wealthy new land.

The title of Adelantado was a vast improvement in power, prestige, and potential wealth over that of a governor. Gold was certainly one of the lesser goals of the voyage, and perhaps the principal interest of the crown, but Ponce de Leon was already an extremely wealthy conquistador and his plantations well supplied with slaves.

His fleet consisted of two caravels, well provisioned for a long voyage, and one small bergantina for exploring shallow inlets and harbors Figure 2. His pilot was Anton de Alaminos, the most experienced pilot in the Indies, who was later to serve as pilot to Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba , Juan de Grijalva , and Hernan Cortes in the discovery of Mexico Nueva Espana.

Alaminos would have learned only dead reckoning and pilotage from Columbus, since this is all that is needed for accurate navigation in the islands. LXXXI, 2, , pp. This impressive and expensive expedition was entirely financed by Ponce de Leon as he expected the goal of becoming the Adelantado of a wealthy new land would fully repay his efforts and investment. In the accounts of this extensive preparation there is no mention of the existence or interest in a fountain of youth.

But this allegation is not supported by valid historical evidence. An examination of the fountain of youth myth in European literature and folklore reveals how and why this was a natural, though misguided, chain of events. The miraculous waters known as the fountain of youth is a Eurasian myth that can be found in the folklore of most ethnic cultures in Europe and the Middle East. The earliest record of a fountain of youth is in the Arabic epic romance of Alexander the Great, known throughout the medieval world from Libya to Syria.

The myth of the fountain of youth appears to have originated solely in the Arabic lands of the Middle-East, as the Christian Bible and the early Greek and Roman literature contains no reference to such a magical fountain. This French account of Alexander finding the magical fountain of youth reads in part :. The old warriors entered the fountain; more than forty-six bathed in it and when they came out they were age thirty and like the best knights.

See how old and bent we are? We have lived more than a hundred years and now you will see us in another guise. They left the fountain rejoicing, and when they returned to Alexander he could hardly recognize them, so young they were" Armstrong : The wonders of Asia and the Middle East and its folklore to include the fountain of youth were also spread throughout Europe in the anonymous and apocryphal Letter of Prester John, which first appeared in , and was republished in many versions during the Middle Ages Wright The early published Letter, told of a legendary Christian Prince, who lived in an area generally associated with Ethiopia or the Far East.

A 13th century elaboration of the Letter reports that: "The miraculous spring is located on an island in the extreme meridian of the world, where long-lived people drew from its waters lasting health and renewal of youth" Wright : Placing the "miraculous spring" or fountain of youth "on an island in the extreme meridian of the world" would point to the islands of the New World discovered by Columbus.

The fountain of youth appears in different accounts as a fountain, river, spring, or miraculous and rejuvenating waters. The fountain is primarily associated with sensual, erotic love, and either drinking or bathing in the waters could restore youthful sexual performance lost with age. And this is a powerful force for keeping an apocryphal myth alive, as witness the current multimillion dollar business of selling aphrodisiacs based entirely on myth.

There were other Eurasian myths, such as Amazon warriors and the Seven Cities of Cibola, that were transplanted to the New World as unfounded romantic fiction by historians and writers of the early sixteenth-century. Amazon warriors first appeared in Greek mythology when Herodotus in BC reported fierce warrior women called Amazons living in an area north of the Black Sea Davis-Kimball : Marco Polo placed the realm of the Amazons in an island of the Indian Ocean, and the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi circa located the Amazons on an island in the Atlantic Marsden ; Lunde : On three occasions in his log January 6, 15 and 16, Columbus reported the Indians told him of a nearby island inhabited only by women.

In other log entries, the Indians stated the name of the island was Matinino and it lay somewhere east of Espanola Dunn-Kelley : ,,, Columbus, who was well read in the early Greek and Arab classics and Marco Polo was quick to interpret the island of "Matinino" as an island of Amazons.

And later , Juan de Grijalva reported that, "the Yucatan was an island inhabited only by women, believed to be of the race of the Amazons" Wagner : It was this same propensity exhibited by Columbus and Grijalva to believe that Amazons were present in the New World, which led other Spanish explorers and historians to believe that the alleged fountain of youth was also to be found in the New World.

Another Eurasian myth transported to the New World was the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola sought by Coronado, but of these several European myths and legends, that were believed to exist in the New World, it is only the fountain of youth that has been associated with the Ponce de Leon voyage.

Peter Martyr, was a learned Spanish court entrepreneur and historian who made it a point to question all the early explorers in order to write his commentary and history of the Indies published in his Decades de Orbe Nova.

Martyr would certainly have questioned Ponce de Leon at the time of his return to Spain and to the court in following his discovery voyage. In his account of the voyage of Juan de Solis, Martyr stated : " Beyond Veragua the coast bends in a northerly direction, to a point opposite the Pillars of Hercules; that is, if we accept our measures certain lands discovered by the Spaniards, more than three hundred and twenty-five leagues from the north coast of Hispaniola.

Amongst these countries is an island called by us Boinca [later Boyuca], and by others Aganeo; it is celebrated for a spring whose waters restore youth to old men" McNutt : In a note on this page, McNutt states that the "countries" referred to is Florida, but Solis at this time was on the coast of Honduras and more than miles from Florida. Martyr does not give a precise geographical location for the fountain spring on Boinca Boyuca or Ananeo, but from the navigational data given it is clear that it was in the Bay of Honduras which Solis visited after leaving Veragua , rather than the Bahamas or Florida.

The distance given of leagues from Espanola is more than nautical miles, which approximates the distance to the Bay of Honduras in the Solis voyage, rather than the Bahamas or Florida which are less than nautical miles about 60 leagues from Espanola. The length of the Spanish league is in contention among Columbian scholars and varies from 2.

The most commonly accepted figure continued after the map. Bimini is the modern name for a small island in northwestern Bahamas opposite Miami that has no valid geographical relationship to the islands or land of "Beniny" or "Beimeni" sought by Ponce de Leon.

In his seven months long voyage through the Bahamas with Indian guides, Ponce de Leon identified twelve islands, none of which bore the name of Boinca, Boyuca, or Ananeo, the islands named by Martyr as the location of the fountain of youth. Figure 4 shows the track of Juan Ponce through the Bahamas plotted from the navigational data in the log. The chart shows seven islands that Alaminos and the Indian guides identified on the north-bound passage and five more were identified on the return passage through the same general area.

The detailed entries in the log describing the islands contains no hint concerning a possible fountain of youth.. Much later, Martyr gave an apocryphal and patently fictitious account of a fountain of youth relayed to him by Fernando Figueroa who stated : "A Lucayan servant [slave] called Andreas, says that when his father was broken by age, he left his native island near Florida, attracted by the report of the power of that spring and the hope of prolonging his life.

He set out for the desired spring, where he made a stay of some time, drinking, and following the treatment indicated by the bathers. He returned home strengthened and with his manhood renewed, for he married again and had sons.

This later and unrelated report by Martyr of another fountain of youth, this time in Florida, was again made with no mention or association with the voyage of Ponce de Leon. The next historian to mention the fountain was Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo in his Historia General, published in Oviedo was the official chronicler for the Casa de Contratacin de Indias in Seville and traveled extensively in the New World to write his official history.

For an extract translation of this comment, see Morison : Another overlooked and unreported, but significant factor is that Juan Ponce took his mistress, Juana Jimenez, along on the voyage Peck : ; : And it should also be noted that Ponce de Leon had sired four children from his wife Leonor during this period in which Oviedo suggests he was seeking a cure for his impotence.

A primary factor that supported the legend that Ponce de Leon was seeking a fountain of youth was the mistaken belief that he was an old man at the time of his voyage. Samuel Eliot Morison in was the first to document that Ponce de Leon was born in and was only 39 years old on his discovery voyage Morison : Before , the historians most often cited as authorities on the subject Scisco ; Davis ; Lawson ; Olschki carried Ponce de Leon in his 50's which lent a false credence to his alleged search for a fountain of youth.

In fact both Oviedo and later Herrera made it clear but without foundation that Ponce de Leon was vainly seeking the fountain for his own personal use. Yet the latest account by the respected Florida historian, Robert Fuson, follows other Florida historians and alleges that Ponce de Leon was seeking the fountain of youth for the aging Ferdinand Fuson : However, Oviedo was the official historian appointed by the crown, so his tendentious and unfounded remark has been regarded as authentic which insured that succeeding historians faithfully copied, and embellished this falsehood in all subsequent histories down to the present time.

Following Oviedo by nearly three decades is the Spanish historian, Francisco Lopez de Gomara, who was the next to mention the fountain of youth in the New World Gomara ; Weddle : Gomara reported that both the fountain of youth and Amazon women were in existence on the island of Guanahani in the Bahamas. Fontaneda was shipwrecked on the Florida Keys about Fontaneda asserted in his memoirs that it was the Jordan River in southern Florida that Ponce de Leon was looking for in order to "earn greater fame or become young from bathing in such a stream.

There never was a "Jordan River" in southern Florida and there is no indication that Ponce de Leon was looking for it. There was however a Jordan River on the coast of South Carolina associated with the exploration of the east coast organized by Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon. This river, named Jordan because it was discovered on the feast day of John the Baptist, was probably known to Fontaneda when he wrote his memoirs. Herrera is the source of the erroneous idea that the river was named for a crew member lost while exploring the river Herrera : III, Not realizing he was on the mainland of North America, he thought he had landed on another island.

He named the region Florida meaning "flowery" , in reference to its lush floral vegetation and because he discovered it at Easter time, which Spaniards referred to as Pascua Florida "feast of flowers". In addition, he was not the first European to explore the area. Spanish expeditions had raided the Bahamas on a regular basis for years prior, and there is evidence that some made it as far as the east coast of Florida.

A neighboring tribe of Caribs had burned the settlement to the ground and killed several Spaniards. His own house was destroyed and his family had narrowly escaped death. The Spanish crown also ordered him to organize a small army to subdue a native uprising on Puerto Rico that had continued in his absence. He left Spain with a small fleet in May Historical accounts of his encounters with the Caribs on Puerto Rico are vague, but it seems there was a series of military engagements with no clear outcome.

He stayed there for two years, until he finally received assurances that his financial empire was secure and returned to Puerto Rico. Records are scarce, but some accounts describe a poorly organized trip. The expedition landed somewhere on the western side of the Florida peninsula, where it was soon attacked by Calusa warriors.

The expedition sailed back to Cuba, where he died in July

Although vitamin B 1 proved to be a single chemical substance thiamin , vitamin B 2 was ultimately found to be a complex of several chemically unrelated heat-stable factors, including niacin, biotin, and pantothenic acid. Recognition that niacin is a vitamin in the early 20th century resulted from efforts to understand and treat a widespread human disease - pellagra.

American epidemiologist and US Public Health Service officer Joseph Goldberger had been instrumental to elucidating the nutritional basis for pellagra. Goldberger conducted a classic series of observational and experimental studies in humans, combined with an extensive series of experiments with an animal model of the condition black tongue in dogs.

Explain the common physical exam findings associated with niacin deficiency. Outline the importance of collaboration and communication amongst the interprofessional team to improve outcomes for patients affected by niacin deficiency. Niacin or vitamin B3 are generic terms for nicotinic acid and nicotinamide niacinamide.

Niacin was initially referred to as the anti-black tongue factor due to niacin's effect on dogs. In the s, pellagra first appeared in Italy and, the name translates to "pella," skin, and "agra," rough or rough skin. Niacin deficiency can occur from a lack of consuming dietary sources containing niacin.

To a lesser extent, niacin is in coffee, tea, and nuts. During meat processing, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide NAD and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate NADP can become hydrolyzed to free nicotinamide. In some foods, such as corn, niacin can be covalently bound to carbohydrates or small peptides, decreasing the bioavailability for absorption in the small intestines. Therefore, some of the earliest signs of pellagra occurred in populations consuming a high corn-based diet.

In addition to dietary sources, the liver can synthesize niacin from tryptophan; thus, a diet containing both niacin and tryptophan is necessary to maintain adequate niacin levels. Excessive and chronic alcohol intake can induce pellagra due to reducing the absorption of niacin. Alcohol use disorder is associated with increased malnutrition and can impair the conversion of tryptophan to niacin.

Further, Hartnup disease results in impaired tryptophan absorption. Isoniazid binds with vitamin B6 and reduces PLP-dependent kynureninase activity, which is a required substance for niacin synthesis. Niacin deficiency results in the condition of pellagra, which, although uncommon in industrialized nations, may be seen in individuals living in poverty or those with extremely low niacin and protein-deficient diets.

Further, individuals with malabsorption, alcohol use disorder, or taking specific medication are at risk of deficiency. In the United States, pellagra is very rare due to the enrichment of processed flour with B vitamins. In the past, native people in North, Central, and South America consumed maize treated with lime or wood ashes, which increased the bioavailability of niacin in maize. Traditional meals consisted of canned fish and stir-fried roselle, or ivy gourd omelets and mung bean noodle soup, or canned fish curry with chili paste and pumpkin.

Within the United States and industrialized nations, with enrichment of foods and an overall decrease in nutritional deficiency-related diseases, pellagra is rarely seen. Further, there were recent reports of pellagra in refugees. Niacin is important for the metabolism of macronutrients carbohydrate, protein, and fat due to being part of the NAD and NADP coenzymes. Additionally, other mechanisms contribute to niacin deficiency.

Altered metabolism of tryptophan presents in carcinoid syndrome, impaired absorption of tryptophan is seen in the autosomal recessive condition Hartnup disease, and prolonged use of certain medications may decrease the production of tryptophan isoniazid or inhibit the conversion of tryptophan to niacin azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, or 5-fluorouracil. Dermatitis in pellagra characteristically demonstrates erythematous bullous changes secondary to mild acute inflammation, which leads to degeneration of the stratum corneum, followed by increased cellularity and fibroblasts, capillary dilation, and increased proliferation and thickening of the epidermis.

Inflammatory cells include lymphoid cells and few plasma cells. Hyperpigmentation also occurs. Inflammation also leads to diarrhea. There are also reports of neuronal chromatolysis in motor neurons and edema in glial and ependymal cells. Pellagra is a condition caused by low levels of niacin or its precursor tryptophan. Niacin deficiency results in the condition of pellagra, which includes the triad or "three D's," dermatitis, dementia, diarrhea, and can result in death.

But tests could find no evidence of any of these. Yes, to solve the puzzle, in , an American doctor called Joseph Goldberger photo, right set out to study pellagra.

He believed there was a dietary cause, and performed experiments on the children in orphanages and patients in mental asylums, many of who were suffering from pellagra. He fed half the patients with a varied diet of fresh meat, vegetables, milk and eggs, while the other unlucky half received the normal diet of mostly maize. He had proven the link between pellagra and diet! To find that, he needed to do more experiments, this time on prisoners.

He managed to induce pellagra in inmates that had previously been healthy by simply replacing their standard meals with a purely maize-based one.

The story shifts to Casimir Funk, who was a Polish biochemist with a special interest in diseases caused by dietary deficiencies. The reason was that milling the brown rice removed the husks and kernels, along with an unknown essential ingredient essential for health. Funk managed to isolate this ingredient, which he called vitamine from 'vital amine'. Lack of a 'vitamine' in the diet led to diseases such as beri beri B 1 , scurvy C , or rickets D.

The further complication was that the ingredient Funk had isolated from brown rice husks, and which had been called vitamin B, was actually 4 different molecules, each with a separate biological function.

So they were renamed vitamin B 1 , B 2 , B 3 , etc. The molecule that prevented beri beri turned out to be B 1 thiamine , the one that promoted cell growth was B 2 riboflavin , while the one that prevented pellagra was B 3.

Not quite — it took until for the conclusive experiments proving vitamin B 3 prevented pellagra, first with experiments on dogs where pellagra is manifested as a black tongue , and later in humans. The systematic chemical name for vitamin B 3 is nicotinic acid, but scientists wanted to avoid any links to nicotine , in case the general public might get the incorrect idea that vitamins contain nicotine, or worse, that cigarettes contain vitamins!

The name niacin was chosen from ni cotinic ac id and vitam in. Foods rich in vitamin B 3.

We were on the second floor with a view over the pool and a sliver of the ocean. I would request an ocean view before check-in but ask not to be in the Turtle Bay House —you are close to the ocean but in your sights is a broken down old fence which would mar any views you may have.

This modern resort is comprised of a hotel, casino, timeshare, and golf course. The beach is adequate, but the sand is darker and denser than you usually find. There are lots of permanent hut-like structures strewn along the beach so you can catch some shade. The hotel is on the Atlantic Ocean so the water can be a little rough for swimming. Connected with the hotel is a challenging hole golf course.

Five of the holes offer great ocean views. Rates drop after 2pm and hotel guests get a discount. There are several restaurants on property that I heard were good but we never tried them. A short walk down the road are several good choices—we quite liked Rock Lobster for seafood and believe it or not, Tex-Mex. After eating seafood for a week, I was ready for something different. The menus are all pretty similar at these so-called restaurants—ribs, lobster and chicken.

Not much variety. My favorite shack is Mr. The food was good—try the Lobster—and on Friday night the live entertainment was excellent. A surviving Latin inscription on one of the lintels reads: "Grace, wisdom and beauty you may enjoy, but beware pride, which alone can tarnish all the rest. On the eastern side between the inner and outer walls a vaulted ramp leads from the outer to the inner gate. The ramp makes a number of elbow turns and is defended by arrow slits and machicolations, making it a strongly defended bent entrance. On the northern side, there is a postern gate flanked by two towers.

On the Western side, the ward between the outer and inner walls does not contain any buildings, but it is here that the concentric principle of defence is most evident, with the inner defences completely dominating the outer wall. The walls on all sides contain passages that act as shooting galleries or vaults leading to arrow slits. The actress had previously been married to British actor Michael Williams, who tragically passed away from lung cancer at the age of 65 in The pair had one child together, Tara Cressida Frances Williams, who was born in September and is an actress who goes by the stage name of Finty Williams. A couple of years after his passing, David asked the Skyfall star if she would open the new badger enclosure at this wildlife centre, which was a few fields away from her home.

Although she declined at the time due to her health at the time, she later opened their red squirrel enclosure and their romance blossomed from there. In my mind's eye I'm 6 feet tall and slender as a willow, and I'll go through life like that". Her large fortune comes from her numerous TV, movie and theatre roles, working as an actor, voice actor and theatre director.

Judi Dench is considered one of the most incredible British actresses of our time, and certainly has the stage and film credits to back it up. After landing roles on TV and in movies from the late 50s, she has starred in a plethora of big titles, with IMDB crediting her for on-screen productions. At her first film audition she was told 'Miss Dench, you have every single thing wrong with your face'.

She made he professional debut in Liverpool before going to the Old Vic in Florence was lovely, of course, and it's a wonderful love story. I did enjoy doing the part, because Maggie Smith and I were old friends from We both arrived in Florence on the same day and neither of us had any family with us, so we would spend all day together filming and then go out to dinner together, catching up on our Old Vic days.

But I didn't enjoy working with James Ivory. I didn't feel that I was on his wavelength and I didn't feel that he wanted me in the film, I have to say that. I remember doing that scene in the middle of the square where she goes mad and attacks the man selling postcards; James went to see the rushes and told me afterwards that everyone had laughed at it, they'd thought it was very funny. I thought perhaps we'd turned the corner but, when I came to post-sync the film, that scene was missing.

When I asked why, he told me that Helena Bonham Carter hadn't been feeling up to it that day, so he'd cut the whole sequence. I don't know if that was the real reason he cut it - I just don't know. I hate how people have been attacking Daniel Craig. It's despicable and it disgusts me. I have filmed with him in Prague and the Bahamas and he is a fine actor.

He brings something new and edgy to the role. His critics will be proved wrong. And then it was working with Bob Hoskins , who I had never worked with before - except radio.

It was like being given a wonderful meal - full of the things you love most. I don't like reading scripts very much. I like it better for someone to just explain to me what it is about this story. I don't think anybody can be told how to act. I think you can give advice. But you have to find your own way through it. The best moment of playing [ William Shakespeare 's] Juliet is the nanosecond when they offer you the part.

On plastic surgery: I've considered it, but I'm too old now. Every time I go to America I wonder if there is some process where it could all be sucked out and I could be out of there in time for dinner, but I'm frightened it would all drop off under the anaesthetic. Of course I have a temper. Who hasn't? And the older I get the more angry I get about things. It's not sudden anger, it smoulders and then if I really let it go on for a bit the shit hits the fan.

I get very angry about general injustice. I get angry about the way people say 'Tomorrow X will make a speech about X'. Just let them say it. I get furious about the whole business of not allowing conkers in school, and banning things because they are supposedly dangerous. I am riveted by the current Iraq inquiry, though angry already because I feel it will end with a report and nobody's actually going to be arraigned for what happened. Young actors go into a run and don't do all the performances.

That would have been unheard of at one time. I know I can sustain a run because of my training. I mourn that there are so many repertory companies that aren't around any more. I don't want the arts to take the form of a reality programme. I heard somebody say the other day that it is good if people can bring drink and food into a theatre and get up and go if they don't like the play.

Well, yes, go out if you don't like it, but where do you draw the line? They tell people not to take pictures of us on stage but when you look up you see red lights twinkling at you. When you go abroad people always talk with such love about British theatre, but the irony is it's not appreciated by the Government as it should be.

The state of the arts has always been, and will always be, precarious. But there is something so alarming about the huge cuts made to companies, particularly when you read of the astronomical amounts some people are earning. Being fulfilled is closing the drawer again and I don't want to do that just yet. I'd bore myself silly. I wouldn't learn anything new. I'd just sit around and I hate wasting time. I hate waste of any kind. I love quiz programmes. I am riveted by The Weakest Link but I'd be too terrified to appear on it.

I've loved living in the same house, in the same grounds with my family. Sammy grandson was 4 when Michael died and he does look extraordinarily like him sometimes. I don't expect you ever get over that. Time changes something, I suppose, but you miss the basic things. Michael was a realist, down to earth, a Lancashire man. I'm a Yorkshire woman and so that was pretty volatile, I suppose. He was Cancerian, I'm Sagittarian. He would say: 'I'm always rushing for the dark, you're always rushing for the light.

If we hold in the middle, there's a kind of balance'. Once, a long time ago, I read some bad reviews and I made the decision not to read the reviews. You get some critics who don't like you, or the play. But they don't have to do it every night.

I don't want to be affected like that. I loved doing "Madame de Sade. A friend told me not to apologise for myself or the play, and I won't. Then I cast it all off and go and put my feet up under the chimney with my family. Suddenly I get up out of a chair and can't rush across the room. But there's nothing I can do about that, alas.

My energy levels are OK, but I can't see very well. She also underwent knee surgery in , but stated that she recovered from the procedure well, and: "It's not an issue for me. A long press of the home key will bring up a list of your most recently used apps. There's a volume rocker on the right side, and the top of the device features a power button and 3. Be aware that the latter is a Type D connector, so you'll have to get a compatible cable to hook the phone up to your TV. Of course, you can watch video and view photos right from the phone, and there's a handy kickstand on back so you can prop the phone up on a desk. Sprint ships the HTC Evo 4G in an environmentally friendly package, but the included accessories are pretty sparse.

For more add-ons, please check our cell phone accessories, ringtones, and help page. User interface Though there will be purists who prefer the standard Android skin, in most cases, we'd choose a device running HTC Sense.

Out of all our custom skins for Android Motoblur, TouchWiz, etc. In many cases, it improves on the core functions by better integrating the features, which is why we're glad to see that Sprint had the sense sorry to go with Sense on the Evo 4G.

This includes a revamped mail widget that can take you to a list view of all your e-mail instead of just one message at a time. This view, however, is only one of several choices. Once in the mail app, there's a handy tabbed interface at the bottom that lets you view unread messages, attachments, meeting invites, and more with a simple touch. The Agenda widget also now displays your whole agenda on the screen, and, like the latest HTC devices, you get an animated weather widget right on the home screen that automatically displays the current conditions based on your location.

You also get a new Group Contacts widget, which lets you organize your contacts by groups. For example, you can set up one for work colleagues, another for friends, and another for just family--whatever you please.

The UI looks good, and it's simple to add contacts to a group, though removing them requires a few extra steps. Sense also makes it easy to access as much information as possible within the contact management system. If any of your contacts have Facebook updates, it will display them right next to their pictures in the contact database. You can also see all your exchanges text messages, call logs, etc. However, we still had multiple instances of duplicate contacts and had to go back and manually link them together.

Another feature, called Friend Stream, provides a single place for all your social-networking needs, piping in updates from Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. Unlike Motoblur, it's not server-based; the phone connects to the sites and pulls information directly from there. By far our favorite new feature, however, is the Leap screen. Pinching the home screen or pressing the home button if you're on the center panel brings up a thumbnail view of all your home screen panels, so if you have your favorite apps and widgets on those screens, you easily "leap" to the screen you want.

The Evo 4G offers seven home screen panels, and there are different "Scenes," which presents a whole new set of seven home screen panels that you can customize by the theme of the Scene Social, Work, Travel, Play, and so forth. Admittedly, it can be overwhelming, but the best part is that you can use as many or as few of the features as you want; the device is completely customizable to your needs.

This is the latest version of Android currently available, so aside from the standard Google services and Android apps, you're also getting such features as Google Maps with Navigation, voice-to-text entry, and live wallpapers. However, if you follow Android developments at all, then you know that Android 2.

We asked Sprint whether the Evo would get an Android 2. We can only hope that Sprint will be a bit more swift this time around than it was with bringing Android 2. That aside, you are still getting an action-packed device that's focused around the 4G and multimedia experience. The Evo 4G is the first phone to take advantage of Sprint's WiMax network, and the smartphone ships with a handful of features that really take advantage of 4G.

For one, the Evo will be the first handset to ship with YouTube's high-quality player, and also includes the aforementioned HDMI port so you can stream videos and photos in HD quality from your phone to your home theater system. The Evo also has a front-facing 1. Now, video calling and Qik isn't new. Video conferencing has long been available in international markets and front-facing cameras are the norm on Nokia's higher-end smartphones, but the Evo 4G is the first handset with a U. Unfortunately, we weren't able to test the video-chatting capabilities, since our review unit didn't come preloaded with Qik Chat, though Sprint says it will provide us with access next week.

Other voice features include a speakerphone, speed dial, smart dialing, voice commands, conference calling, visual voice mail, and text and multimedia messaging with threaded chat view. Bluetooth, 3G, GPS, and integrated Wi-Fi are also onboard, and you can use voice and data simultaneously, provided you're in a 4G market. HTC also throws in a few of its proprietary apps, including the Peep Twitter client and Footprints, which uses the phone's GPS to capture favorite locations and lets you chronicle trips with geotagged photos and notes.

Of course, additional apps are available in the Android Market. As with all Android phones, you can only save apps to the phone's main memory. Comics Music. Filed under: Google Mobile. In person, it's anything but. It is thin, deceptively lightweight and absolutely beautiful. It's an impressive device. Thin, light, fast, powerful, the whole package.

Each team has seven athletes on the court — six players and a goalie — with players attempting to score goals by throwing the ball past the opposing goalie.

Players almost exclusively move the ball using their hands, but they have other means for advancing and blocking it. A player may stop, catch, throw, bounce or stroke the ball in any manner and in any direction using their hands, fists, arms, head, body, thighs or knees. However, a player may not use any part of their body below their knees to play the ball unless it has been thrown directly at their legs. Players can hold the ball for up to three seconds and can take up to three steps while holding it, but goalies are exempt from this in the goal area.

Each handball game consists of two minute halves with a minute halftime.

This has happened when something makes him look stupid, like being buried under a mountain of puppet dick or having crows invade his personal space. Dave, despite all of his joking around seems to always take things generally seriously if needed, which also leads him to suppress any other emotion so they don't get in his way. Also later Dave expresses deep unwillingness to use his time powers because he doesn't want to abuse them which shows how mature Dave actually is. Dave is a bit forgetful.

He always loses his place in the latest MS Paint Adventure , sets several Sylladex traps , only to release them on himself moments later, completely forgets to pour out some apple juice for his homie , forgets all about his Timetables and thus, forgets he can go back in time, and even manages to forget his own intentions to forget something though that one might be him being ironic again.

He also seems to have trouble facing his own mortality. Underneath his cool facade he appears to be rather caring towards animals; he was visibly upset when he accidentally harmed a Rambunctious Crow and he may share Jade's interest in anthropomorphically persuaded fauna.

However, this might just be one of his many ironic gestures. Regardless, his gift to Jade - a picture of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff as furries - seems pretty sincere.

Dave's dream self sleeps on Derse , in his room along with a dream Lil Cal. Notably, there are drawings of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff on the walls of his dream room. His dream self is said to have been awake all along without Dave's knowledge. Jade Harley 's bubbly, emoticon-laden text might seem to mark her as the traditional prey of the cool kid, but Dave doesn't seem to mind it at all.

Conversely, Jade appears to take Dave's coolness at face value. He's been guiding and consoling her after she entered the Medium. Dave is similar in build to John. He wears a graphic of a record on his shirt, which was sliced in half the graphic, not the shirt due to an incident with his Bro. His room contains swords and musical equipment. He wears a pair of sunglasses that look vaguely familiar. His interests are described as having a penchant for spinning out unbelievably ill jams with his turntables and mixing gear.

He has passion to talk about bands that no one has ever heard of but him. He also has a more bizarre hobby of collecting weird dead things preserved in various ways. He is also an amateur photographer, and has his own makeshift darkroom which is actually just his closet , and operates a number of ironically humorous blogs, websites and social networking profiles, including a webcomic called Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff.

At any moment he'll drop some phat rhymes on a mofo and obviously represent. When away from his desktop computer, he communicates using his iPhone. At first, Dave emulated and respected his older brother. After John changed the timeline and Dave thought more about how he was treated, he began to despise Bro and recognize his behavior as abusive. He believes that Bro hated him, ruined the idea of being a hero, and that the challenges Bro set up to make him stronger, actually made Dave come to fear blood, danger, and the sound of metal hitting together.

Before realizing this, Dave did not seem at all perturbed by his brother's habit of collecting puppets and, in fact, seemed to admire his brother's ventriloquist rap acts. However, he's mentioned to Rose that the puppets are starting to freak him out and that he's had dreams where Lil Cal speaks to him, causing him to wake up in a cold sweat.

While Cal's speaking and attempted influence on Dave is probably due to the juju's being possessed by Caliborn , Gamzee , and Arquiusprite , the doll's appearance in Dave's dreams likely has to do with Cal's presence in Dave's dream tower. His current Fetch Modus is Hash Map, which is similar to John's and Rose's in that it is based on a type of data structure, though he later receives an unknown one from future Dave. Despite this, Dave is prone to making occasional mistakes with his Modus, such as spilling apple juice on his turntables, firing his ninja sword at a rambunctious crow , and shooting many deadly shuriken at himself.

Dave and John are best friends. Though they are shown to tease each other about practically everything, such as John's odd taste in movies and Dave's admiration of his brother, they do legitimately find each other to be cool, as evidenced by their birthday letters to each other, and enjoy one another's company. In the early acts Dave has been shown to be friendly with Rose but finding her rather exasperating and demanding. Their conversations tend to degenerate into showdowns between his ironic coolness and her grandiose eloquence.

On other occasions he confided to her about his growing anxiety over puppets and flipped when Rose gave the impression that her elaborate dream suicide would be the more traditional kind. It has been suggested by Rose that Dave's desire to be the coolest is due to an inferiority complex, but despite her constant teasing of him, she seems to believe that he is genuinely cool, if not in the same way that he thinks he is. Before knowing that they were siblings, they flirted with each other on occasion.

Whether this was teasingly is somewhat debatable. Any conversation between him and Rose is completely saturated with sarcasm and irony, but they seem to enjoy trading barbs. Later, during their time on the meteor, they develop a more sibling-like relationship since they are actually siblings , regularly teasing each other, particularly Rose teasing him about his odd habits.

Dave seems to be concerned with Rose's past drinking habits as well. He is more gentle towards Jade, but can get exasperated with her silliness especially when she is asleep.

Dave seemed to be fond of Jade as he was constantly showering her with his music and often seemed to be seeking her attention though Dave tends to seek out everyone's attention. It can be assumed that he significantly enjoys talking to her. However, he was occasionally annoyed by her inconvenient sleeping habits.

Later, the two worked together on LOFAF to stoke the forge midway through their session, which resulted in disaster when Bec Noir showed up and he died. Jade kissed him in order to awaken his dream self, and was successful.

Dave ultimately fights both of them at once and dies a heroic death trying to save her. Overall, Dave appreciates the relationship he has with Jade and cares quite a bit for her.

His relationship with Bro was complicated. While he seemed to admire his brother very much and aspired to become like him in many ways, Bro's puppet obsession freaked Dave out, especially with Lil Cal although he's in denial about it at first. Also, Dave's upbringing, filled with Bro's unique mindgames , mentally traumatized him somewhat, all in part of both his training and Cal's possible influence on Bro.

When Bro was introduced, he and Dave sparred on the roof of their building, showing that Bro took great care in developing Dave's martial abilities. Hussie has additionally likened these actions to abuse. When Bro died while fighting Jack with Davesprite, Dave found him, and had contemplated taking Bro's sword, but then decided against it as a sign of respect for his brother, after realizing he could not remove it without drawing more blood.

While speaking to Terezi, Dave denied that he loved Bro. The doomed alternate Dave from the opposite end of Terezi's coin flip later admits to Aradia that Bro's death saddened him, confirming that Dave did genuinely care for his brother in a respect.

When talking to Dirk, he also states he didn't particularly like his Bro and that he felt uncared for, and that it took him a long time to fully figure out how messed up his upbringing was. Because he compared Bro to a hero, Dave in turn never liked the idea of heroism. He does admit that under better conditions, he would've greatly admired his drive. At first, Dave has a dislike of Karkat, thinking of Karkat as the shouty romance-obsessed troll who likes things intentionally to bother him.

Their dislike for each other increased when Karkat tried to split Terezi's time between them both with a grid , which dissolved into penis ouija and Karkat getting tangled in Dave's god tier cape. During the meteor's final approach towards the B2 session Dave is beginning to be treated like how Karkat used to treat Sollux. Later in their conversation, they are revealed to consider each other ' bros ' or ' best friends '.

On the post-retcon meteor journey Dave and Karkat developed a much closer relationship. Rose mentions what sounds like penis ouija having turned from a violent tussle in pre-retcon to a giggly dick-drawing session post-retcon. Finally, in ipgd's Vine Hussie himself confirms it directly. Karkat's last line in the comic expresses concern to Dave, hoping that he is okay. On Earth C, they are both shown to continue spending quite a bit of time together, both in the Credits sequence and the snaps.

His patron troll is Terezi Pyrope. During their first conversation, he showed her his comic which was the predecessor to SBaHJ, which he considered to be too derivative of his Bro's stuff. Nevertheless, he considered Terezi just another troll, and acted vaguely hostile to her.

He planned to forget her name just after their conversation, but he forgot to. During their conversations in the Medium, they traded shitty comics, and Terezi guided him through his quest.

During their final conversation from his perspective, he got angry at Terezi for intentionally creating a doomed copy of himself and putting him in a position to kill the copy.

Though, after spending a year with her and the other trolls on the veil after the scratch, they seemed to become close friends, building a Can Town together. Though Dave never confirmed his relationship with Terezi was more than platonic, Karkat shows jealousy towards Dave for getting so much attention from Terezi, and claims that they are very obviously dating.

Later on, Terezi becomes upset after meeting Latula , feeling uncool in comparison. Karkat misunderstands and assumes the reason she is upset is because Dave had broken up with her, suggesting that the two may be in a relationship.

In the wake of Terezi's kismesissitude with Gamzee being revealed Rose comments that she is unsure of how Dave would react to Terezi dating Gamzee "on the side", confirming that they were in a relationship. After finding out about the kismesissitude, Dave - already uncomfortable with the very concepts of quadrants and black romance - decided that he could not date Terezi while she was in another relationship and broke up with her. However, they still seem to have developed a friendship during their time on the meteor, as evidenced by their conversations, and Terezi joining him in fighting B2 Jack Noir.

The thought of meeting Bro's younger alternate universe self unnerves Dave so much that he asks Rose if they can slow down and fight Jack for a while, though he is completely okay with meeting John 's, Rose 's, or Jade 's guardians, further highlighting their difficult relationship.

The first time Dave and Dirk interact unless you count a heavily glitched pesterlog in the GAME OVER timeline, where neither was able to read the other's text is forced and awkward, concluding with Dave saying he wishes they could fight soon.

They later manage to break the ice and have a long conversation about their relationships to their respective alternate selves. Dave admits he's been projecting his negative feelings towards his Bro onto Dirk, even though he realizes that he is a different person.

They eventually hug having resolved the initial tension. They then continue conversing, and Dave says that he is more comfortable sharing his inner thoughts with Dirk than he is with anyone else, even Karkat.

Dave also references to his encounters with Davesprite by asking Dirk "Why are we so fucking awesome" during the last round of lightning round, to which Dirk responds with Davesprite's line of "That's the best fucking question anybody ever asked.

Dave and Dirk make a plan during [S] Collide with a little prompting from the latter, and Dave decapitated Dirk who was decapitated for the second time in-comic without much reluctance. He later sees Dirk again and we see both Striders smiling Dirk, for the first time noticeably while being on the platform. Dave gets along well with Roxy when he first talks to her, as they exchange "lightning rounds" of questions about each other, but finds many of the questions Roxy asks him rather personal, as he notes in his interactions with Dirk.

Another possible mention of his relationship with Karkat is brought up when Roxy asks him if he's ever been in love, which he clearly doesn't want to discuss. He constantly refers to her as "mom" and he occasionally makes Freudian slips where he refers to Roxy as being hot, which seems to amuse Roxy.

Early on he was trolled by Tavros. He has a low opinion of Tavros, considering him an awful rapper. Their first conversation resulted in Dave freaking Tavros out so much that the troll actually blocked the trollee.

Another conversation involved Tavros trying to send some burns Dave's way, but seeming to make mistakes as he did so and Dave not really paying much attention to him. Later , Tavros was in a dream bubble with a doomed version of Dave, performed some 'sick fires' in his room and gave him some compliments, which Dave returns, though these were likely insincere on Dave's end as he then asks Aradia if this is his personal hell.

Dave first talked to Kanaya in act 4 , in which he gave her deliberately bad advice for talking to Rose. He became friends with her during the three-year journey, and he was very courteous towards her, such as offering her coffee when he was about to make himself some and warning her about Rose being drunk.

In Openbound , Dave expressed his desire to get to know her as well, which Kanaya thought was a good idea. Dave suggested that she shows him the Alternian art of slampoetry, which Kanaya thought was a bad idea. Dave has spoken to Gamzee twice: once months before the story began after Gamzee went insane, and once during his session before Gamzee did. On the pre-retcon meteor journey, Dave mentions that he only saw Gamzee once after the first day and that he never said one thing to him.

He and Karkat agree that everything about Gamzee is ridiculous.

There should be equal access to uniform and quality assured screening across England.

Families should be provided with high quality information so they can make an informed choice about newborn hearing screening. NHSP programme standards will be reported annually and providers should ensure adherence through regular and robust interrogation of their screening data and performance management of their service and screeners.

Trends is an online system that allows local programmes, commissioners and other stakeholders to benchmark their programme performance and monitor improvements over time. Access is password protected and restricted to specified groups of users, managed by the PHE Screening helpdesk. The reports generated enable providers to monitor screener activity, adherence to care pathways and test protocols, including appropriate screen outcome setting plus yield and referral of the screen.

KPIs are a subset of programme standards that are collated and reported quarterly. Once a KPI consistently reaches the achievable level, the KPI will be reviewed to determine if other areas should be included instead. The national screening programme will produce regular KPI reports for the provider of the screening programme and NHS England to monitor and evidence adherence to the screening pathway.

Local programme management tasks guidance will support local programmes in quality assuring the service they provide. Quality assurance QA is the process of checking that programme standards are met and encouraging continuous improvement, to ensure that all women and their babies have access to high-quality screening wherever they live. QA is essential in order to minimise harm and maximise benefits of screening. Providers should have an internal quality assurance and risk management process that assures the commissioners of its ability to manage the risks of running a screening programme.

Participation in a formal process of QA is the responsibility of each local screening programme. There are screening and quality assurance resources available for all screening programmes and you can also contact regional SQAS teams. There is also specific guidance on the external quality assurance process for antenatal and newborn screening programmes. Quality improvement makes local programmes safe, effective, patient-centred, timely, efficient and equitable.

A quality improvement culture is an integral component of the governance and performance management processes for the screening and hearing care pathway for children. Competent and motivated screening staff, evidence-based protocols and accurate information all underpin a high-quality service. Monitoring these components helps NHSP providers develop a greater understanding of what, if any, improvements are necessary in order to provide the highest quality screening service.

In addition, rigorous audits will help reduce the risk of errors and, where this occurs, it will help identify them quickly and manage them effectively and sensitively. Self-assessment systems should be embedded alongside external review, so that continuous improvement becomes an integral part of service delivery.
