Four decades after it burst from screens, we celebrate Ridley Scott's peerless sci-fi horror hybrid. I would happily argue that Alien is a perfect movie. On paper, it sounds kinda schlocky: a creature feature in which a guy in a monster suit gorily dismembers a crew of thinly written characters. And yet this peerless blend of sci-fi and horror still grips the emotions and imagination 40 years later.
It was called Star Beast. Inspired by decades of science fiction set on strange planets among predatory aliens, the story followed a crew of working stiffs trucking across the galaxy until they were interrupted by a mysterious signal. Traveling down to a forbidding planet, they discover a chamber full of what appear to eggs.
One of the crew makes the mistake of looking inside Alien is a great example of the collaborative nature of filmmaking, of how a team of people bringing their best make a film more than the sum of its parts. O'Bannon and Shusett laid the groundwork with their script, including the horrifying details of how the alien reproduced. Walter Hill and David Giler added a subplot about an android. Designer HR Giger conceived one of the most distinctive and horrifying alien creatures committed to film before or since.
The art and effects teams made space more real than it had ever been. With Alien and 's Blade Runner , director Ridley Scott shaped a vision of the future that influenced science fiction and moviemaking to this day.
Robert Aldrich and Walter Hill were among those considered to direct, and it's strange to think the film could have been very different if helmed by someone other than Scott. What could have been a creature feature B-movie was elevated by Scott's serious treatment of the subject. The industrial look and feel of Alien, which Scott would perfect in Blade Runner, laid the foundations for cyberpunk's corporate dystopia. Kane starts to gag, choke, and scream in pain as his chest is ripped open by a little baby alien Chestburster.
It grows fast and starts to pick the crew off 1 bye 1 until only Ripley remains and her cat, Jonesy. She decided to get off the ship so she sets it for self destruct and gets supplies and gets into an escape pod. She leaves with the alien on board and she manages to shoot it into space and she goes into cryo sleep and the movie ends with the words ripley:this is ripley the last survivor of the nostromo signing off. What does Xenomorph mean?
The film has a passing reference to the alien species as Xenomorphs. Marchese, Dobie teacher, said she is a fan of Alien. I particularly remember the suspense of the air duct scene. Marchese says she would recommend the movie for others to watch. I thought the movie was great it was scary and the alien seemed unstoppable as it stalked the crew amazing. Far from tempering the horror, this added layer of melancholy somehow added to it. Cabin in the Woods , for all its cheekiness, basically closes with the end of the world; in fact, it turns Armageddon into a sight gag.
There, the title monster is chillingly realized through a variety of methods. But the Babadook is also a symbol, an echo of the rage and frustration the protagonist experiences as a beleaguered single mother entertaining dark thoughts about her child.
Here, then, is a film that channels the old and the new, with both the human and the demon trapped in an eternal clutch of solitude and madness. Horror ultimately works not on revulsion but on a kind of helplessness on the part of the viewer — a feeling that we, along with the characters, are being pulled toward an inexorable and terrible fate. And key to that effect is a sense that our fate will be not just a painful or menacing one, but also a profoundly sad one.
In the end, the ubiquity of the modern monster suggests a notion that once was unacceptable: that perhaps these rough beasts deserve this world more than we do. Already a subscriber? He is unexpectedly powerful, nearly choking Ripley to death in a manner not unlike the facehuggers themselves.
Further, Ash is an agent of corporate cruelty, reminding audiences that humans are always their own worst enemy. Despite all the detractors of Prometheus , this scene stands alone. The natural process of impregnation and birth was mercilessly corrupted in the original film. Now, a fresh variation on that imagery results in a repulsive, hypnotic C-section from hell.
Firstly, Noomi Rapace is absolutely magnetic throughout the sequence. She sells every ounce of desperation, fear, and strength to overcome. Finally, the design and execution of the squid-like creature is totally convincing and ghastly. It is a Lovecraftian nightmare that encapsulates every fear of life growing within your body.
Now come the inevitable selections, iconic enough to reach beyond genre, and even cinema itself. So ingrained in pop culture, that its effect is undeniable. The xenomorphs have always been reminiscent of insects, regarding their designs and nature. And facehuggers quite resemble spiders, with their numerous legs, agility, and leaps.
However, their invasive method of reproduction basically amounts to oral rape, which is ugly in every way. That its victims are implanted with an organism that will proceed to break free while the host is still alive, is further unsettling.
But the facehugger itself—slimy, swift and impossible to remove—is a compelling mixture of many simple, yet brilliant ideas. The might of the classic xenomorph is owed to numerous things. Besides the imagery, it is the final stage of an evolving threat. An adversary that changes so frequently in nature and appearance further fuels the mystery generated in the original film. When unable to anticipate or understand the enemy, there is nothing more frightening—particularly stranded in space. By Anthony Fertino Updated Oct 15, Share Share Tweet Email 0.
