How do flip effects work

When a face-down Flip monster is attacked, during damage calculation the monster is flipped face-up, then it is determined whether or not the monster is destroyed by battle. If a card effect destroys a face-down Flip monster, its Flip effect cannot be activated since it is not flipped face-up. It still takes battle damage and dies. This is why Flip Effects can never mis the timing. A set monster put your opponent in a difficult position: they could ignore it, and let you flip it face-up on your next turn, doubling your field presence; or they could risk attacking it, and running into its DEF.

In the case of Super-Nimble Mega Hamster your opponent would need an answer to the upcoming Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter that was surely on its way to the field via Hamster's effect. Now the role of flip monsters has largely been replaced by Normal Summons in today's game. Need to build field presence or search for monsters?

There's a Normal Summon you can leverage to search a monster from your deck or send one to the graveyard. There are dozens of outstanding Special Summons that are just waiting to be added to your hand or graveyard, and cards like Armageddon Knight , Souleating Oviraptor , and Virtual World Mai-Hime - Lulu are outperforming the best Flip Effects in the game.

Many modern search effects are even attached to Special Summons rather than just Normal Summons. Some flip monsters embrace their inevitable destruction with effects that trigger after they've left the field.

Shaddolls and Krawlers are particularly adept at recycling themselves. A set Shaddoll Falco presents opponents with a dilemma: attack and deal with a second monster, or use a destruction effect and deal with Falco a second time.

Of course, that's a false dilemma if you have access to an effect that can banish a set monster, or return it to the hand. Beyond that, a set monster gives your opponent time to establish negation effects, or summon monsters that are immune to a flip monster's effects.

The power creep that's left Flip Effects in the dust developed in two ways. First, previously-powerful abilities once reserved for Flip Effects have been moved to Normal and Special Summon triggers. You don't need to commit a set card, protect it from destruction or battle for a turn, and then flip it later.

Instead you just summon that monster, get its effect immediately, and often save your Normal Summon for follow-ups to interruption. Sorry to ask so much all at once especially when I'm sure that the rulebook does make it clear I really do appreciate all these answers you're giving me. In few words, when a monster attack that attack can be divided into different Steps it is a bit different and more complex than this description, so do read the Rulebook to get a better and more accurate understanding : Attack Declaration: Here you are saying "my monster X attacks your monster Y".

Another important thing is that the flip effects takes place After Damage Calculation , as per this ruling : If the attacked monster has an effect that activates when it is flipped face-up such as a Flip effect , that effect will NOT activate at this time. Let's illustrate this with an example of a monster attacking a face down Man-Eater Bug : Attack is declared. Improve this answer.
