The path switchbacked up the side of the mountain. I scrambled up, occasionally touching a rock or grabbing some vegetation to keep my balance. A couple more steps up a dirt slope and, to my surprise, I materialized on a level, asphalt trail.
A half-dozen walkers were as surprised to see me heave into view as I was to be there. I tried to be nonchalant, like Sean Connery as James Bond landing in his jetpack on a city street , and joined the flow of walkers.
The trail wound around the mountain, gently rising. It was a warm morning and people were enjoying the trail in pairs and small groups. Entire families, two or three generations, were out. At least two people in wheelchairs were among them. There was a wide range of skin colors, body types and ages, from seniors to small children.
It was so nice to see. This must be where Riverside meets. My assumption was that the trail was leading inexorably to the summit, but there was no way to tell. I just enjoyed the stroll and the views of the Santa Ana River — yes, there is a riverside in Riverside — and the communities of Rubidoux, Jurupa Valley and beyond.
A stone bridge with steps provided a shortcut to the next tier of the path. I took it. It was simpler than scrambling up the hillside again. The Peace Bridge was built in by the city of Riverside to commemorate the work that was done by Frank Miller and his family while they were away on travel. It was dedicated when they returned, and a plaque was created that said:.
Anno Domini This bridge was built by neighbors and friends of Frank Augustus Miller in recognition of his constant labor in the promotion of civic beauty, community righteousness, and world peace. It is a beautiful bridge that adds to the uniqueness of this trail. Great for photoshoots or to admire while making your way to the top.
On the summit of Mt Rubidoux, you will find many different things to explore. I have never been up there when there was not at least 10 to 15 other people hanging out on top. The cross, which is the highlight of the mountain, is so big it can be seen from the freeway, and it alone is worth the hike. This is an especially beautiful area to watch the sunset as you can get a great view if it is clear.
To head down from the mountain, simply go back the way that you came. Every year people make the walk to the top in the dark to watch the sunrise over the city and hear a message. I have done it multiple times and always enjoy it. Here is a video I made from If you are doing this, plan to leave at least 30 minutes before sunrise usually 6 AM so that you have a chance to make it up the mountain and grab a spot.
People get their much earlier though, to get the best places. It lasts about an hour, and you can read more about it here. The whole mountain is closed that day and people gather in the park below to watch the firework being shot off the mountain. It is a lot of fun if you are in the area during that time of year. Avoid going up close to sunset. Admission to Mt. Rubidoux Trail and Memorial Park Hikers can take in quite a few sites along the way up the mount.
The Peace Bridge, which was built in , commemorates the continuous work by Mission Inn owner Frank Miller who helped build this park. The Summit at the top of the mount is recognizable by its signature cross. Finally, the view from the top is breath-taking with views of Downtown Riverside and Inland Empire. Other places to visit near Mt. Rubidoux Trail and Memorial Park Hikers are sure to be hungry and thirsty after a trip up the mount, so a stop at Butch's Grinders at the bottom of the hill is a great place to stop and have a bite to eat.
The Mission Inn in Riverside is another great place to stop and take a break, or if you're from out of town, it's a great place to stay for a night or two. It's only about a mile from the trail.
