I am from Assam and have grown up with the Bhut jolokia making regular appearances on my plate at meal times. Bhut means ghost and jolokia is the Assamese word for chilli. The chilli may also be found in neighbouring states such as Manipur and Nagaland, where climatic conditions are similar to Assam, but I do not know if these are equally hot.
Prices vary in different religions. It is called oo morok in Manipuri where it has been originated. Ghost pepper became famous in and after when IDTL found its scoville rating. My parents have been eating the ghost chilli since their childhood as I had been told.
And my grandparents too. It was never a product of Nagaland or Assam. Before Assam, Nagaland imported the stuff from Manipur and made it famous by exporting it to Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh and other north Eastern states.
